Logic is like Marmite some people love it and, I'm afraid, some people hate it. It divides opinion. Here are a few thoughts on logic:
There's a mighty big difference between good, sound reasons and reasons that sound good Burton Hillis
Logical errors are, I think, of greater practical importance than many people believe; they enable their perpetrators to hold the comfortable opinion on every subject in turn. Bertrand Russell
Once master the machinery of Symbolic Logic, and you have a mental occupation always at hand, of absorbing interest, and one that will be of real use to you in any subject you may take up. It will give you clearness of thought—the ability to see your way through a puzzle—the habit of arranging your ideas in an orderly and get-at-able form—and, more valuable than all, the power to detect fallacies, and to tear to pieces the flimsy illogical arguments, which you will so continually encounter in books, in newspapers, in speeches, and even in sermons, and which so easily delude those who have never taken the trouble to master this fascinating Art. Lewis Carroll
Logic is the art of going wrong with confidence Joseph Wood Krutch
Better to be without logic than without feeling Charlotte Brontë
Logics will get you from A to B, Imagination will take you everywhere. Albert Einstein
"How dreadful!" cried Lord Henry. "I can stand brute force, but brute reason is quite unbearable. There is something unfair about its use. It is hitting below the intellect." Oscar Wilde
Logic: The art of thinking and reasoning in strict accordance with the limitations and incapacities of the human misunderstanding. Ambrose Bierce
And logic is often the topic of derision (see below)
Hi. Last week I gave you a general outline of the module and an idea of what you should expect from this module. I also talked about what I expect from you. I really hope that you'll enjoy this module and find it useful later on when you study business or another social science subject. If you have any questions about this module please ask - I'm happy to help. In the lecture this week we are going to look at defining logic and discussing what logic will (and won't) help you to do. I've started collecting links from the web to provide you with explanations and exercises to help you understand and practice some of the main points I cover in the lectures. In the seminars we will be mainly doing practical activities to help you master the basic ideas in logic. Here are some logic websites to get you started: Test your own logic Logic Self-Taught: A Workbook Introducing Logic Basic Exercises in Logic Essential Logic: Basic Reasoning Skills for the 21st Century Logical Fallacies and the Art of Debate Why Study logic?
